MEN of the ONDO State Police Command have arrested 18 sex workers in the capital Akure for defying the dusk to dawn curfew imposed by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and placed them in isolation just in case they  may have contracted the coronavirus.

So far, Ondo State has had eight cases of coronavirus but fortunately, none of these has resulted in deaths, with two of those affected having made full recoveries. As a precautionary measure, however, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the state to curtail the spread of the virus.

Over the weekend, however, the police arrested the 18 sex workers in a brothel at the Shasha area of Akure around 10.30pm on Sunday, while the task force was monitoring compliance with the government order. They have since been placed in isolation and blood samples taken to ascertain their Covid-19 status.

Dr Doyin Odebowale, Governor Akeredolu’s spokesman, said: “We caught them around 10.30pm. We have brought the medical team to come and take their samples, while the brothel has been shut and we will invite the owner for questioning.”

He added that the women were caught in a brothel in defiance of the curfew. Dr Odebowale urged residents of the state to always cooperate with the government by obeying instructions on how to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
